Removal of the "no applied instrument" restriction from a Flight Instructor Rating

Pre-entry Requirements

To begin the course for the removal of the “no applied instrument” restriction on your flight instructor rating you require:

  • Valid Licence with a valid FI(A) rating with the supervisory restriction removed
  • Valid Single-engine piston (land) rating
  • Hold either a valid Instrument Rating or valid IMC rating
  • Have flown 200 hours in accordance with IFR (10 hours if instruction only for the IMC is required)

The course

To apply for the “no applied instrument” restriction to be removed from your FI(A) rating, you must have completed the course which includes:

Flying

  • 5 hours dual training
  • Test with a CAA FIC examiner

Ground School

  • 10 hours of groundschool covering all aspects of instrument flying and the teaching of the instrument rating and/or IMC rating syllabi.

What you can do with your new Rating

Give applied instrument instruction to students. This will be for the IMC rating and also for the Instrument Rating if you have sufficient experience and the relevant standardisation from your flight school.
