Night Qualification

Night Flying

Pre-entry requirements

Before starting the night qualification you will need a JAA PPL with a valid SEP (Land) Rating and a medical that contains no restrictions with regards to flying at night.

Please note, however, that you can complete your night qualification as part of your JAA PPL during the last 5 hours of that course if the time of year is correct.

Night flying is only available at Wycombe Air Centre when the hours of darkness coincide with the hours when the airfield is open! This is generally between the end of October and the beginning of March.

The Flying Course

The minimum requirement for a Night Qualification is five hours of flight time including:

  • 1 hour of night navigation
  • 5 solo take-offs and full stop landings

Groundschool

There is no official groundschool requirement for the night qualification but your instructor will direct your self-study towards certain human performance, air law and technical aspects of flying at night.

What you can do with your Night Qualification?

Once you have been issued with your Night Qualification you may fly as a private pilot with or without passengers (subject to currency requirements) during the hours of darkness! Generally flights at night, although conducted under IFR, are undertaken in “visual” conditions when it is smoother and less windy than during the day. With stunning views of the world completely different to what you will be used to, night flying is a great way to hone your navigational skills!
