IMC

 

To begin your IMC rating you must hold a valid JAA PPL (or UK PPL if issued prior to June 1999) and we would recommend having a valid SEP (Land) Rating and medical as these will be required prior to issue of the rating.

The Flying Course

To apply for the IMC rating to be added to your licence you must have the following requirements:

• 25 hours total hours since PPL issue (15 will be covered by the IMC course itself)
• 10 hours as pilot in command following PPL issue of which 5 hours may be in a flight simulator (FNPTI, FNPTII, BITD) and 10 hours must be by sole reference to instruments

Groundschool

There is an IMC Rating ground examination to pass. The exam is multi-choice and has a pass mark of 75%. You can self-study for this examination but we would recommend you attend a groundschool course with our dedicated groundschool instructor to ensure that your knowledge is deeper than that simply just to pass the examination. The groundschool is organised on an ad-hoc basis as and when required and can be on a one-to-one basis or for more than one student at a time.

What you can do with your IMC Rating?

The IMC rating is a UK-only rating that allows the holder to fly in worse weather conditions than their PPL will allow. A holder of an IMC can fly out of sight of the surface (either in or above cloud), and fly in flight visibilities of zero. There are still some restrictions, mainly to do with visibility during the take-off and landing phases of flight, and the rating is only valid in UK airspace.
