Flight Instructor (Aeroplanes) (Restricted)

Pre-entry Requirements

To begin a course for the Flight Instructor (Aeroplanes) (Restricted) Rating you must have the following pre-entry requirements:

• Valid UK CAA or JAR-FCL CPL(A) or
• Valid UK CAA or JAR-FCL PPL(A) with 200 hours total time and 150 hours pilot in command
• Valid Single Engine Piston Rating
• Have passed all the CPL or ATPL written examinations
• 30 hours on single engine piston aircraft within 6 months preceding pre-entry flight test
• 10 hours dual instrument flight time (up to 5 hours on a FNPT or flight simulator)
• 20 hours cross-country flight as pilot in command
• 300nm cross-country flight with two away landings
• Pass a specific pre-entry flight test with an FIC instructor within 6 months of starting course

The course

To apply for your FI(A) rating, you must have completed the course which includes:

Flying

• 30 hours total time including 25 hours dual flight with an FIC instructor and 5 hours (maximum) mutual flying with a course buddy
• Flight test with a CAA examiner

Ground School

• The groundschool requirement on the FI(A) course is 125 hours of theoretical knowledge instruction of which up to 40 hours can be via directed self-study. Of these 40 hours self-study, 15 can be completed prior to the course commencing – contact us for details of what you should focus on in these hours.

What you can do with your new Rating

Fly as a flight instructor giving ab-intio tuition to students in daylight hours under VMC. If you hold a valid CPL(A) you can get paid for these hours! The FI(A) rating is initially restricted with regards to sending students on first solos and the level of supervision you will require. This restriction is removed via experience and paperwork via the CAA.
